This is the third annual running of the Osprey 10K/5K Run/Walk held by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park to coincide with the return of the osprey to their nest in April. The funds raised will go to the park to support programs and activities and its mission of environmental stewardship and education. The race is sanctioned by USTAF and will have chip timing from start to finish.
The course is all on paved roadway, out and back, and takes place entirely within the park. This is a wooded route with numerous views of Smith Mountain Lake. The course is moderate. There are a couple of sharp small hills and a couple of slow easy-up hills about 1/2 mile long. The turn around at the Discovery Center is arguably the best place on land to see the lake. You can see both upstream and downstream for miles. A water station will be along the course with numerous marshals to guide the runners.
